Ms. Annita Lay
Special Education

Parents and Students,

During this unprecedented time in our history, information is changing rapidly. Please check back often for the most updated information that we can provide. That being said, we have no definite answers as to what next week will be like. We will update you as soon as we know. What we can tell you is that if any child under the age of 18 needs food, 3 schools are distributing FREE "Grab and Go" breakfasts and lunches, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-12: Southaven Intermediate, Horn Lake Intermediate, and Chickasaw Elementary in Olive Branch. No id is required, but the child must be present. Any DC child can go and collect these items, not just students from those schools. It will be like a drive-through, and no child will have to get out of the car. If parents would like to buy one of these food parcels, the price is $3. Exact change is required. Knowledge is power, Power is Education. ALay You are still a student with a brain that requires knowledge. Take this time at home to fill that beautiful brain of yours! When I see you at school again, I want to hear about what you have learned. Please contact me if I can be of any help.

About the Teacher/Welcome Msg

Dear Families,

Welcome to my classroom located at the home of the “Mustangs” Overpark Elementary! Thank you for allowing me to be part of your child’s learning process. I look forward to working with your child as their special education teacher in either the self-contain setting, resource setting, inclusion classroom, or academic assistance setting.

My name is Annita Lay and I have thirteen years teaching experience working with Cincinnati Public Schools in the State of Ohio and I have been with Wentzville School District in the State of Missouri, and Catholic School for the Archdiocese of St. Louis Missouri. My husband and I have been married for 31 years and he is blessed we have four children, Christina, Gera, Alleah, and Antonio. Gerald and I are very active in our children’s education and their activities, we enjoy coaching youth sports, golfing, bowling, and workout together. I received my Masters in Elementary Special Education from Xavier University. My goal as a special education teacher is to assist a students’ growth by teaching strategies and techniques to increase the success rate of each student. My self-contained/resource classroom will be a democratic learning environment that allows the student to actively participate in the decision making process; when appropriate.

My goal is to facilitate information to our learning community while encouraging the students to develop and explore their own ideas of learning. We will develop a community that centers on respect, accountability, and life-long learning. We will work on achieving progress on each child’s IEP goals as well as our community goals we will establish on our first class day together. I will concentrate on self esteem building as well as working on the student‘s “I can do it” belief.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.

Resource Setting

I will be teaching your child resource Mathematics, or Reading, and or Writing. We will focus on the IEP goals that were established by the IEP team at the last annual meeting. Each quarter I will send home within the report card a copy of the student’s goals and progress percentage. I take for these goals several times a week in order to achieve an accurate measure of their abilities. Your child will need to be prepared with their planner, notebook, folder and pencil.
